Why Trump Is Right to Shut Down the Department of Education

Date: February 26, 2025

The U.S. Department of Education has long been a federal overreach, dictating how states run their schools and forcing compliance through funding control. President Trump has been vocal about shutting it down, arguing that education belongs to the states and parents—not bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.

Education: A Constitutional Right for the States

The U.S. Constitution does not grant the federal government control over education—that power was intended for the states. However, with the creation of the Department of Education in 1979, federal authorities began seizing control, imposing national mandates and holding states hostage with funding restrictions.

Instead of allowing parents, teachers, and local school boards to make decisions, the federal government has pushed one-size-fits-all policies that have lowered education standards and prioritized political agendas over student success.

The Common Core Disaster

One of the biggest failures of federally controlled education was the introduction of Common Core State Standards under the Obama administration. Rather than improving education, Common Core dumbed down students, removed critical thinking skills, and replaced effective traditional learning with confusing methods that left children frustrated.

Common Core was forced onto states by tying federal funding to its adoption. If a state refused to implement the program, it risked losing millions in funding. This was nothing short of educational extortion—and a prime example of why the federal government should never have been involved in education in the first place.

The Push to Restore Education to the States

Trump’s plan to eliminate the Department of Education would return full control to the states, allowing them to:
✅ Set their own academic standards without federal interference
✅ Reinstate cursive handwriting, traditional math, and factual history
✅ Ensure parents have more control over what their children learn
✅ Fund schools based on state priorities, not Washington mandates
✅ Restore traditional skills like reading an analog clock, which has been removed from many schools, further disconnecting children from fundamental life skills.

Without the Department of Education, schools would be accountable to parents and local governments, not unelected bureaucrats pushing political indoctrination.

Federal Funding as a Weapon

For decades, the federal government has used funding as leverage to force states to comply with national education policies. If a state refuses to adopt certain programs or policies, it risks losing federal education dollars. This tactic has been used to:
❌ Push leftist agendas into the classroom
❌ Remove traditional subjects like cursive writing and classic literature
❌ Promote ideological programs over academic excellence
❌ Eliminate essential life skills like reading an analog clock, making students dependent on digital devices.

By shutting down the Department of Education, Trump will put an end to this coercion and allow states to educate children according to their values and needs.

The Fight for America’s Future

The battle over education is a battle for America’s future. The federal government wants an easily controlled, uninformed population, while parents and communities want smart, capable, and independent thinkers.

Returning education to local control is the only way to restore excellence in American schools and ensure children receive a proper, unbiased education.

Final Thought: Education Belongs to the People

America’s education system has been hijacked by federal overreach, but we have the power to take it back. By eliminating the Department of Education, Trump is ensuring that education is once again guided by those who know best—parents, teachers, and local communities.

It’s time to end the federal education scam and restore power where it belongs!
